The Valve Index warranty length is one (1) year starting from the date of shipment for all Hardware and supporting accessories. The Valve Index return period is 14 days from date the Hardware is received.
If you are unsatisfied with Valve Hardware, having issues with it, or need to return it, check out and follow this guide to get the help you need.
Valve’s Limited Warranty
Valve currently warrants their Hardware to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under ordinary consumer use for one (1) year starting from the date of shipment). During the Warranty Period, if the Hardware does not work properly due to a defect in materials or workmanship, and provided you follow the return instructions set forth below for obtaining warranty service, Valve will, at Valve’s option, either: (i) repair the Hardware; (ii) replace the Hardware with a new or refurbished product with equal or greater features and functions as the Hardware, or (iii) refund your purchase price. UNLESS YOUR LOCAL LAW GIVES YOU A REMEDY THIS WARRANTY CANNOT LIMIT, THIS IS YOUR ONLY REMEDY. This Warranty applies, to the extent permitted by law, to any replacement Hardware for the remainder of the original Warranty Period or for ninety (90) days, whichever period is longer. All replaced parts, and all Hardware for which a refund is given, shall become the property of Valve.
To submit a warranty claim, you can pursue a refund or request product service. Valve has made product service easy with a “Return Merchandise Authorization” (RMA) process.
How to Submit a Valve Index Warranty Claim
If you are having issues with your Hardware and would like to submit a Valve Index warranty claim, follow the steps below for assistance:
- Go to the Steam Support Site.
- Select your Steam Hardware Device (Steam VR).
- The next page will ask, “Which VR product do you need help with?” Select “Valve Index.”
- Select your issue to review troubleshooting information or select “Contact Steam Support” if necessary and are ready to start the RMA process.

How to Transfer a Valve Index Warranty
If you bought a used “2nd hand” Valve Index and need to submit a warranty claim, don’t be discouraged. While getting support for this may not be as easy as if you were the original owner, it is not impossible. To start, follow the instructions above to contact Steam Support and let them know the issue you are having and that you are not the original owner. In most cases, given the hardware is still within the one year warranty period, they will honor the warranty. Steam Support might ask for the account name or the transaction ID of the original Valve Index purchase. If possible, have this handy or try to get it when purchasing the used Valve Index Hardware or contact the seller you bought the Hardware from. They may also send a message to the original owner to verify the transfer. After the transfer, Steam Support will not need further verification for future warranty claims. There is no extension of warranty upon transfer and the period will still be one year from the original purchase of the Hardware.
Refunds & Returns
For Valve Index, Steam Deck, and related components (including controllers), Valve gives you 14 days from the day on which you or a third party indicated by you (other than the carrier) receives the Hardware purchased to cancel your order. If you cancel your order within those first 14 days, you then have another 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation to Valve to send back the goods by following the instructions provided to you.
By meeting all of the timelines for a refund, Valve will reimburse all payments received from you for the Hardware purchased and will also reimburse delivery charges for shipping the Hardware to you for the least expensive type of delivery offered by Valve, no later than 14 days after Valve or their agent received the Hardware. Valve will use the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction unless you have expressly agreed otherwise, or your original payment method does not technically support the refund. If the purchase was made from a Steam Wallet, Valve will reimburse only to that Steam Wallet. In any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the Hardware.
This return program may not be available to you if the Hardware has been modified, abused, or is otherwise no longer in new condition as a result of your testing of the Hardware exceeding what would be possible to you when buying the Hardware in a retail store. In that case, you may be liable for the diminished value of the Hardware due to its treatment while in your possession.
